Hi, I'm Mrs. Brittany!
What languages do you speak?
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I've been in the field of early childhood for ten years. I love the early stages of children's lives. My background includes reading through dramatic play, science/sensory experience through hands on experiments, and nature! Children can reach their full potential when they are a part of the learning experience. It is important to respect their opinions and show children just how fun it can be to learn through play!
What's your philosophy on what it means to be a great teacher?
A great teacher would a person that understands that the smallest lessons can be the biggest in a child's life. A great teacher goes above and beyond in making each child feel special in their own way. This type of teacher also knows how important it is to establish a trusting relationship with parents because parents are their child's first teacher. Finally a great teachers knows how to have fun!
What advice would you give to someone who is considering becoming a teacher?
My advice to an aspiring teacher is to lead with your heart. Always remember that children having feelings and opinions too! From the moment a child wakes to the time the child goes to bed that child is being told what to do. It is important as a teacher to find a balance where you are respected as the teacher, but also rewarded to be the child's playmate.
In your opinion, what is the role of the live teacher in a world where it is becoming increasingly easy to get access to information through the internet and online courses?
It is great to have access to information, but nothing replaces the experience of being the moment. Children need hands on experience with experienced teachers.
How can we, as teachers of children, work to build a society where people are respectful towards each other and the environment?
When we were children we were all innocent. It is important for adults to get out of their own routine to do things for their community. Volunteering is a great way to center oneself again. It is important to see the value of what others do to help our world grow and prosper.
Who was your favorite teacher and why?
My favorite teacher was Ms. Bruno. She was a teacher that saw the best in me when I didn't. She was there to listen to me, while at the same time tell me when I was wrong. Every moment that impacted me while in her class I can remember vividly. I do believe it is teachers like that that permanently leaves an imprint of their student lives that they will never forget. How grateful I am to experience a teacher like that!
Share a teaching memory that had a profound impact on you.
The moment when you realized your preschoolers are ready for "Big Kid" school...my class were playing with materials that our class had found around the house at their homes. It was the moment when I saw a group of children solving their own problem without needing me. They were resourceful! They came up with a plan, gathered the materials, and successfully completed it together! I could remember sitting there amazed. I was so use to them needing me to help them when it got a little challenging. Proud teacher moment!
What is your philosophy on and approach to behavioral management?
Children have the right to be upset, or have a tough day. It is my job to teach children how to communicate their emotions. My job is to prepare children to become positive adults by teaching children how to self regulate themselves. I don't believe in "time out". I do believe in having conversations and coming up with a plan to make better decisions. For example: A child is upset because another child is playing with a toy that she wants. She begins to have a tantrum because she wants the toy now, and not wait her turn. I would talk to the child that wants the toy and together we would come up with a plan of what she can do while she waits for classmate to finish.
Do you have experience working with children with special needs? If so, please specify.
