Hi, I'm Sarah!
Tell us a little bit about yourself. Sarah has co-owned and managed the Abode Farm CSA in upstate New York for the past five years and is a director of the Mall of Found archive and artist residency program. A graduate from Hampshire College with a degree in ethnography, sustainable agriculture, and critical pedagogy, Sarah is devoted to combining her passion for nature, social-justice, and the arts in education. She has worked as an educator in Waldorf programs, community gardens, farms, and public schools. The desire to cultivate a connection between children and the natural world through experiential and creative acts is at the heart of her work.
What's your philosophy on what it means to be a great teacher? Teaching with an open heart and clear communication leads to a world of discovery for students and teachers alike. Offering guidance and freedom for children to learn from each other and the world around them is central to my philosophy. Being a kind, nurturing, and calming presence in the classroom is my goal. I seek to bring moments of creativity, imagination, and deep exploration and guide students toward tools for resiliency in an ever-changing world.
How can we, as teachers of children, work to build a society where people are respectful towards each other and the environment? "
Discovering the rhythms of nature leads to great inspiration. From animal tracking to growing and cooking food, physical activities help our minds and bodies grow. Encouraging tenderness and responsibility toward our earth and each other while exploring the inter-connectedness of all beings is a powerful exercise in consciousness. I believe that experiential learning helps cultivate awareness, curiosity, strength and independence in children. Creative minds and healthy bodies are ready to take on the world!
What is your philosophy on and approach to behavioral management? Communicating with clarity, understanding, and patience is very important when working on behavior. Children always deserve clear explanations and sensitive guidance.
